My name is Esther Mogada & I am the person behind Creating A Space. I am so excited you are here & I hope you can get a sense of who I am and what I do.
Storytelling is something that has always been part of my life. Growing up, I would always watch interviews of celebrities on how they made their success or interviews on people going through things & how they overcame hard circumstances. Truthfully, watching stories saved my life. I always seek out stories to help me through hard times, or to inspire me to do better. For me, stories were a vehicle for me to see myself in someone else or have representation on the things that I wanted to achieve within my own life.
I am half Irish, half Ugandan and I have lived in different cultures all my life. I was born in Sudan and lived there until I was 4. Then as a family, we moved to Northern Ireland for 6 years until I was 10. After that, my family & I moved to Egypt and lived there for 6 years. This is where I think I developed my love of people & stories because I was always around an international community & exposed to different types of people.
After living in Egypt for 6 years, we moved to Dublin for a year & then moved back to Belfast when I was 17 years old. Truthfully, I found this move the hardest because, at the time, there weren’t that many people of colour in Belfast, and I felt very alone. In Egypt & in Dublin, I was always surrounded by people from all backgrounds, but in Belfast, I felt so different from everyone & struggled to feel like I belonged ( and still do).
I ended up going to Ulster University and got a degree in Fashion & Textiles ( then went on to get a Masters in Fashion & Textiles) and thought this would be the path I would take. Little did I know that the creative path takes lots of different turns. For 5 years I dabbled in different creative things to figure out “what my thing was”. I started a Streetwear Fashion brand, I was part of a Fashion collective where we threw underground fashion shows, I started a podcast with my close friends, I owned a textile brand & sold my textile art around the country, I hosted events, I ran Hip & Hop nights and flew in Artists from Dublin and London and then finally started Creating A Space where I just wanted to tell stories.
When I look back at the last 10 years of my creative journey, I often try to find the thread on what connects the dots. I always wanted to tell stories no matter what I was doing. My instinct was to document the process or interview people to promote my events, fashion shows or hip-hop nights. Even though I didn’t realize it at the time, I was a filmmaker in the making & just dreamed of the day when I could do this full-time.
Fast forward to 2020, I decided that I was going to take on Creating A Space on my own & go all in with running this as a business. I had no filming or editing experience & truthfully didn’t know what I was doing. The love of wanting to tell stories pushed me forward & I used the skills of interviewing people as a vehicle to start this business. Slowly but surely, I was getting booked for projects & have built my skillset of filmmaking & telling stories over the years.
As the brand has evolved, I've shifted to creating story-driven video content for business owners. I'm passionate about storytelling, and it's at the core of what I do. I have created short documentaries & storytelling projects and that is where I come alive!
Over the last 4 years, I have achieved a lot. I have worked on projects that I’ve always dreamed of doing, traveled internationally for projects & created the life & business of my dreams. I am so grateful that I get to do this for a living & will continue to grow. I’m excited to dive deeper into storytelling & work with an international client base.
I hope my story gives you an insight into who I am, where I’ve come from & where I am heading.
If this story resonates with you - I’d love to work with you!
